Meeting of Members of European Georgia with Representatives of Movement “Assembly of Abkhazians”

Factions 22 Oct 2019
Meeting of Members of European Georgia with Representatives of Movement “Assembly of Abkhazians”

Members of the Parliamentary Factions: "European Georgia", "European Georgia - Movement for Freedom" and "European Georgia - Regions" met with the representatives of the organizations united in the "Assembly of Abkhazians".

The meeting focused on holding the regular elections of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia and legislative changes thereof.

“If there is a representative body, its main principle is its interim election that establishes accountability and the fundamental rule of democracy. It is logical to review and initiate the first version of the draft law", - Giorgi Bokeria, a member of the Faction "European Georgia", stated.

Members of the Faction and representatives of the Assembly of Abkhazians have elaborated and plan to submit a joint initiative, which envisages election of Supreme Council together with the following parliamentary or local self-government elections on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage with secret ballot for the term of 4 years according to multi-mandate ED with proportional system. It is meant to be held together with elections.

According to Giorgi Bokeria, "European Georgia" supports the initiative of representatives of the "Assembly of Abkhazians" and plans to consult with other political parties, including the current ruling political bloc.
As the participants of the meeting noted, the Supreme Council of Abkhazia is institutionally legitimate, though illegitimate constituently. It was elected in 1991 and comprises only 19 members.

According to them, elections of the Supreme Council ensure active and qualified representation of the population of the occupied territories before the Georgian authorities.
