Rati Ionatamishvili: today, women with disabilities are under higher risk in gender regards on the one hand, and as the persons with disabilities on the other hand and our duty is to focus on these issues
The Deputy Chair of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, Rati Ionatamishvili held the final meeting with the representatives of self-governances within the Thematic Inquiry Group on Accessibility to Healthcare Services for the Women with Disabilities”.
“We have set up the Thematic Inquiry Group in cooperation with NDI as accessibility to healthcare services for women with disabilities poses a special challenge today. If we overview the average life span of women with disabilities, it is less than the average life span of men with disabilities. Thus, we need to discuss and outline all the problems, identify them and make certain steps to ensure accessibility”, - R. Ionatamishvili noted.
According to him, the field meetings have already been held in the regions with the women with disabilities, human rights organizations, self-governances and managers of medical institutions.
The parties discussed the problems and the challenges women with disabilities encounter, as well as the services to be established for elimination of the problems.
“The problem lies in the fact that the greatest part of the medical institutions, as well as the medical services are not adapted to the specific needs of women with disabilities. We also need to inform the population about the reproductive health and screening. Today, women with disabilities are under higher risk in gender regards on the one hand, and as the persons with disabilities on the other hand and our duty is to focus on these issues”, - he noted.
