The Committee heard the Acting Chief of the Intelligence Service, Shalva Lomidze reporting about the peace treaty of Nagorno-Karabakh on Security Situation in South Caucasus.
“The Committee has already heard the Military Intelligence Department of the Defense Ministry and our strategic partner – Head of NATO Liaison Office. We keep the hearings and today, we will hear the report by the Intelligence Service on the security situation in the region as a result of the peace treaty of Nagorno-Karabakh. As you may know, the treaty envisages the Russian military presence in South Caucasus, which poses threat and is a challenge not only for Georgia but for the security in the region”, - the Chair, Irakli Beraia stated.
The Committee will also hear the assessments of the Intelligence Service about the recent developments in our strategic partner country – Ukraine. Deriving from the significance of information, the Committee resumed in camera, where Sh. Lomidze and the Director of the Analytical Department of the Service, Givi Tumanishvili delivered respective information.
After the sitting, the parties commented to the media. “We heard the report by the Intelligence Service. The reporter informed us about the peace treaty in Nagorno-Karabakh and its consequences. As you know, this treaty envisages the increased Russian military presence in South Caucasus, which poses threat not only to our country but to the region. We heard a detailed and qualified analysis. In response to the threats we encounter, the Government of Georgia keeps adapting to the situation and undertakes the respective remedies – enhance the national security system to respond to the security challenges against our country. Deriving from the relevancy of the issue, we discussed the developments in Ukraine, informed by the Intelligence Service. The aggressive and destructive actions of Russia in the region and the Black Sea against our Ukrainian partners are particularly alarming and require the strict and adequate response of the international society”, - I. Beraia stated.
“The Committee members asked the questions about the importance of our Service for the national security. We introduced the analysis and assessments of our Service and overviewed the challenges, that deriving from the situation, can be posed to Georgia”, - G. Tumanishvili stated.
