At the meeting, participated by other Ministries and NGOs as well, parties spoke about the windbreaks and development prospects. As the Minister of Environment, G. Agulashvili stated, the problem originates from 90s, when the windbreak trees were chopped down, added with the climate changes later, which today entails degradation of almost of kind of soil, and in Shiraki we witness desertification.
The parties spoke about solution ways. The field specialists suppose that the windbreaks shall be restored. As noted, the aggravating point is absence of legal regulations, lack of information about owners, areas, insufficient database.
The Committee started to study this problem and development of the relevant drafts last year, when the Committee was Chaired by G. Agulashvili.
One of the authors of the draft, Head of the Committee Staff, I. Akhalbedashvili introduced the main provisions of the draft on Windbreaks and the general information about the current state. “The windbreak issue is urgent, especially against the climate change background and today it is more important than 20-30 years ago. The greatest part of the lands is less fertile due to destruction of the windbreaks”. He noted that the alarming data was revealed with the researches.
The parties agreed on the starting point to be restoration of the windbreaks to impede exhaustion of soil and degradation thereof. The ultimate goal requires simultaneous development of the drafts and practical steps. The Committee will further develop the draft and the relevant agencies will accelerate and encourage restoration of the windbreaks.
