The Parliament hearing the Reports by the State Security Service and the Interior Ministry of Georgia on Security Situation on Occupied Territories and Along the Occupation Line

The Interim Commission on Restoration of Territorial Integrity and De-occupation, the Defense and Security, and the Foreign Relations Committees heard the representatives of the State Security Service and the Interior Ministry of Georgia on Security Situation on Occupied Territories and Along the Occupation Line.

“Our agenda includes the issue concerning the security state on the occupied territories and along the occupation line. The Interim Commission and the Committees according to the competence established the close cooperation with the Security Service and the Interior Ministry. We keep 24/7 communication on the relevant issues concerning the national security and interests of our country. It is evidenced with our various field visits to the occupation line to study at place the security situation. We have also held the Committee hearings”, - the Chair of the Commission, Irakli Beraia stated.

After consulting with the SSS, the decision was made on the basis of the recommendation to hold the sitting in camera. “The presentation they are to introduce concludes the state secrecies and hence, the sitting is being held in camera. Pursuant to the Rules of Procedure, the decision on closing the sitting shall be made in a closed mode”, - he noted.

According to the Deputy Head of SSS, Alexander Khojevanishvili, the SSS has introduced the wide and comprehensive presentation concerning the occupied territories and the occupation line. “We discussed the threats, illegal bordering, human rights and all acute issues deriving from these territories. We have a certain plan introduced at the sitting. We take the advantage all opportunities available to ensure peaceful development of the process. All our allied organizations and allied states are engaged in this process and we take all remedies to keep the peaceful process in this region”, - he noted.

According to the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Sophio Katsarava, the situation on the occupied territories still remains a key challenge for the country with the paramount role of the international community therein. “At the sitting, we discussed the facts of detention of the EUMM observers and first of all, detention of Georgian citizens, as well as prevention of similar facts. We overviewed the mechanisms available to prevent and respond to the detentions”, - she stated.

“We outlined the reality we are in and discussed the actions and the prospect of our country to further be developed”, - the Deputy Chair of the Defense and Security Committee, Koba Kobaladze noted.

According to I. Beraia, SSS has been informed about the developments on the occupied territories. “Based on the hearing, we may conclude that the Security Service is informed about the developments on the occupied territories and along the occupation line, about the illegal processes thereon and the activities by the occupation force on these territories”.
