The meeting of the Chair of Agrarian Issues Committee, Gela Samkharauli with the Assistant to the Representative of FAO, Mamuka Meskhi

The meeting was of introductory nature. The parties spoke about projects to facilitate development of agrarian sector. M. Meskhi informed G. Samkharauli about activity by FAO and noted that this organization is neutral, unbiased and result-oriented. UN Food and Agrarian Organization actively cooperates with the Government of Georgia and implements currently 7 projects, including for facilitation of agricultural cooperatives and statistic, highland development etc.
“FAO implements many important activities for Georgia. Now, when in terms of legislative harmonization with EU, in agrarian direction there is much to do, close cooperation with FAO is particularly important”, - G. Samkharauli stated.
Agriculture is the priority direction for the Government and high assignments are consumed on development thereof but it is still early to speak about the tangible results but Georgia has resources enough and shall emphasize ecologically and biologically clear food production. As noted, in terms of agriculture, Georgia has unconsumed capacities. We can not only maintain the unique species and genetic resource but we can produce them, which requires efforts.
The parties agreed on necessity to develop business links and outlined future cooperation. FAO representative office was established in 2004, though cooperation with this organization starts in 90s. Many projects have been implemented since.
