Joint Statement of the Committee on European Integration and Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia on the Europe Day
For many years, celebrating "The Europe Day" has become a tradition in Georgia.
The Schuman Declaration, drafted in the name of peace, prosperity and freedom on May 9, 1950, laid the foundation for the union now called the European Union.
"The Europe Day" is important for all Europeans, including the citizens of Georgia. This day is a symbol of peace and unity in Europe, which Georgia has been striving for since the first days of restoration of its independence.
Georgia has firmly embarked on the path of EU integration. In recent years, Georgia has taken significant steps towards consolidating democracy, protecting human rights, strengthening the rule of law, and good governance and a market economy.
Timely and effective implementation of the Association Agreement between the EU and Georgia, consistent legislative and institutional rapprochement of Georgia with the EU, economic integration in accordance with the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, are important grounds for the country to apply for full EU membership in 2024.
The EU membership is a constitutional task of Georgia, which is based on the unwavering will of the citizens of Georgia. That is why it is important that Georgia's application for EU membership in 2024 become a common goal of political forces in Georgia.
Georgia's successful integration into the EU is impossible without civil society and their support and involvement in this process is especially appreciated and valued.
Strengthening people to people contacts ties, enhancing cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture and sport with the EU and its member states is of great importance for EU integration. Visa-free travel to the EU is a tangible achievement for Georgian citizens and its smooth operation is important.
Today, the European Union is the main guarantor of peace and stability in Georgia. Dealing with modern hybrid challenges requires further strengthening of cooperation within the framework of the EU's Common Security and Defense Policy, so that the main achievement of the Europe Day turns into a cornerstone of further development for Georgia as well.
