Tamar Chugoshvili Meets Human Rights International Expert, Maggie Nicholson

First Vice Speaker, Tamar Chugoshvili held a meeting with Human Rights International Expert, Maggie Nicholson, who is visiting Georgia to prepare an independent report on the National Human Rights Strategy (2014-2020) implementation in Georgia.

“This is a very important document. Georgia is a leading country in the region in terms of human rights in both, legislation elaboration and policy-making directions. Nevertheless, there are a number of challenges, and therefore, constant monitoring is important tool that will enable us to determine whether people enjoy the rights and freedoms granted to them by law”, – Tamar Chugoshvili, the Parliament First Vice Speaker said.

The National Strategy, adopted by the Parliament of Georgia on April 30, 2014, addresses 23 thematic areas of human rights, including such areas of major challenge that the country faced at that time: justice system, penitentiary system, elimination and prevention of torture and ill-treatment, protection of privacy, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, minority rights, rights of children, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons and migrants, gender equality and labor rights.

Maggie Nicholson is in Georgia following the invitation of the European Union and the United Nations, in order to meet with the stakeholders of the Strategy implementation after five years, when the Strategy came in force.
