Guguli Magradze: the Action Plans of all Parliamentary Committees shall reflect the monitoring of the gender dimensions in security issues

The Member of the Gender Equality Council, Guguli Magradze participated in the online meeting
Gender and COVID-19 – Experience by the Security Sector in Georgia”, held under the aegis of the UN Women and DCAF.
The meeting was attended by the DCAF expert, Megan Bastick; UN Women representative to Georgia, Erika Kvapilova; Deputy Interior Minister, Nino Tsatsiashvili; Advisor to the PM for Human Rights and Gender Equality, Lela Akiashvili; representatives of the Defense Ministry and Interior Ministry engaged in countering COVID-19.
They informed the attendees about the success story of Georgia in countering COVID-19, coordination between the agencies, the challenges they encountered in this process and gender direction in general.
M. Bastick introduced the compendium of gender and security practical instructions. The participants discussed the gender dimension in countering COVID-19 and introduced the priorities spheres to be stressed in development of the new national action plan for women, peace and security.
As noted, the Gender Equality Council of Georgian Parliament has developed and submitted the recommendations to the Governmental Coordination Council about protection of the economic rights of women upon the pandemic and protection of women from domestic violence.
The Deputy Chair of the Education, Science and Culture Committee, Guguli Magradze emphasized the Parliamentary oversight to improve gender equality in the security sphere.
“Inasmuch as the concept of security comprises all spheres of human safety: healthcare, economic activity, education etc. – the action plans of all Parliamentary Committees shall reflect the monitoring of the gender dimensions in security issues”, - she noted.
She raised the issue of provision of women participation in peacekeeping missions and talks. “It is particularly unacceptable that women are not represented in the peace talks, which has a negative effect on the efficiency of the negotiations”.
