Irakli Beraia participated in the International Online Conference “Peace and Security in Europe: 12 Years of Georgia’s Struggle for De-Occupation” dedicated to the 12th anniversary of Russia-Georgia War

The Chair of the Interim Commission on De-occupation and Restoration of Territorial Integrity of Georgia, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Irakli Beraia  participated in the International Online Conference “Peace and Security in Europe: 12 Years of Georgia’s Struggle for De-Occupation” dedicated to the 12th anniversary of Russia-Georgia War hosted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry along with the European Front Initiative of the US Institute for Near East Policy.

The Foreign Minister, David Zalkaniani opened the event attended by the Chair of the Friendship Group of Georgia at the US House of Representatives, Congressman Adam Kinzinger; Head of the EP South Caucasus Delegation, MEP Marina Kaljurand; German MP Manuel Sarrazin, Deputy Foreign Minister, Head of the Georgian Delegation to Geneva Discussions, Lasha Darsalia, and the representatives of the international analytical and research centers.

The agenda included Russia-Georgia war and its negative impact on the Euro-Atlantic security, security and human rights grave situation in the occupied regions, importance of the peace and security in the Eastern European region for peace in EU and NATO, engagement of the international society in de-occupation of territories of Georgia etc.

Irakli Beraia informed the attendees about the security situation in the occupied regions, increasing militarization and illegal military trainings, gross human rights violations and aggravated humanitarian situation, provocations by the occupation forces during the pandemic and hybrid campaign.

He underlined the necessity of the pressure by the international society on Russia, maintenance of a high level of de-occupation in the bilateral negotiations between the international partners and Russia, admission of the international security mechanisms to the occupied regions, imposition of the restraining measures on the persons convicted in violation of human rights.

He also dwelt on the peace-keeping initiative of Georgia, reconciliation between the conflict-divided population etc.
