Mariam Jashi and Guram Macharashvili visited Gelati Academy of Science

Today, the Chair of the Education, Science and Culture Committee, Mariam Jashi and MP, Guram Macharashvili with invitation of the representatives of the Patriarchate, Metropolitan John and Father Bidzina visited Gelati Acdemy of Science in Kutaisi.
The Metropolitan provided the tour to the Academy and introduced the current situation. The Agreement between the President of Georgia and the Catholic-Patriarch has been signed in 1885 on establishment of Gelati Academy, however, no legal status has been granted to the organization due to which it encounters legal and often financial problems. MPs decided on in-depth study of the issue. “We, as the law-makers, will study the issue and put it to respective process”, - G. Macharashvili stated.
According to M. Jashi, in-depth study of the issue allows compliance with modern standards of historical and theological sciences.
“The representatives of the Patriarchate appealed not only for regulation of legal status but for the issue of facilitation to the Gelati Academy in theological terms. Naturally, it is an interesting issue. We will discuss not only Gelati Academy but will consider uniform strategy of development of theology as a scientific sphere in Georgia. Today, we held the first introductory meeting. Taking our historical, religious and scientific traditions into account, deriving from the origins of Gelati Academy, it is the possibility to ensure compliance of theological sciences with modern standards”, - she noted.
