Speech by Kakhaber Kuchava at European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs

The Vice Speaker delivered the speech at the sitting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament.

Kakhaber Kuchava stressed on the main directions of the foreign policy of the country and emphasized that for the first time in Georgian history the Georgian Dream's European and Euro-Atlantic integration as a foreign course of Georgia was supported by the existing Constitution.
Pursuant to the Vice Speaker, while the Georgian Government stays adherent to its policy of peaceful resolution of the conflict based on specific steps of de-occupation and reconciliation, Russia remains the main challenge for the country.

K. Kuchava underlined the importance of the international community's support for Georgia's policy of de-occupation and non-recognition of the occupied territories.

Tending to his European colleagues, K. Kuchava highlighted the strategic partnership between Georgia and the EU and the progress made in the process of implementation of the Association Agreement.

“Georgia has never been as close to the EU as it is today. The country has an ambitious plan and the clear support of the majority of the population in making even more progress on the path of EU integration, for which Georgia's European perspective is of paramount importance”, - K. Kuchava noted.

The Vice Speaker also reviewed the specific results achieved by Georgia through democratic reforms and briefed MEPs on recent developments within the country.

The main focus fell on constitutional reform and the changes to the electoral system.

Talks focused on the developments of November, 2019 and the ongoing dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition on the 2020 Parliamentary elections. Mr. Kuchava spared his time for scrutinizing the successful implementation of the Fourth Wave of Judicial Reform, which was hailed by international partners and organizations.

The last part of the report focused on Georgia’s reforms in the field of human rights and accomplishments thereof.

The speech of Kakhaber Kuchava emphasized the importance of the support of MEPs and their statements regarding the ongoing processes in the country, which shall be based on objective information and factual data.

Along with the Vice Speaker, the State Minister for Reconciliation,Ketevan Tsikhelashvili also addressed the MEPs. Ms. Tsikhelashvili spoke broadly about the grave situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, the humanitarian crisis and the illegal process of borderisation.
