Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee 25 Sep 2020
The sitting of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee

The Committee discussed with the II reading the bill by Nino Tsilosani, Sulkhan Makhatadze, Kakhaber Kutchava, David Songulashvili and Roman Muchiashvili on the Status of the Protected Areas.

According to S. Makhatadze, the bill envisages the creation of Mariamjvari protected area in Sagarejo Municipality covering the Mariamjvari reserved area and the newly created Tsiv-Gombori sanctuary. The area of the protected territories will constitute 5958.3 hectares. The bill is to become effective as of January 1, 2021.

The Committee approved the bill and discussed with the II reading the bill initiated by the Government on the Environmental Responsibility, aiming at legal regulation of the sphere in line with the “Polluter Pays” principle.

According to the reporter, the Deputy Environmental Minister, Nino Tandilashvili, the approval of the Committee is important: “During the consideration of the initiative, we had the opportunity to in detail discuss every issue within the regulation sphere of the law. It is a brand new standard in the environmental sphere to in a new manner regulate the environmental responsibility issues similar to the best practice of the EU. The bill is to increase the responsibility of the private sector and ensure higher efficiency of the state enforcement system”, - she noted.

She introduced the terminological changes and the Committee approved the bill.
