Meeting of Kakhaber Kuchava and Irakli Beraia with Reinhard Bütikofer and Jean-Christophe Belliard

The Vice-Speaker, Kakhaber Kuchava and the Chair of Foreign Relations Committee, Irakli Beraia continue the visit to Brussels. Post hoc the speech by K. Kuchava at EP’s sitting, Georgian lawmakers held meetings with the member of the Alliance 90/The Greens, part of the European Green Party, Reinhard Bütikofer and the Deputy Secretary-General at the European External Action Service, Jean-Christophe Belliard.
During the meeting, K. Kuchava highlighted the grave situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, the humanitarian crisis and the process of illegal borderisation. The meeting emphasized the steps taken by Russia towards the actual annexation of the occupied regions and the threat posed to both neighboring countries and the entire region, including Eastern European countries. The parties underlined the importance of the European partners' support for the policy of non-recognition of the occupied territories and the maintenance of the Georgian-Russian conflict on the international agenda.
The Vice Speaker also stressed the recent developments in the country and introduced the results yielded through democratic reforms. K. Kuchava noted of the historic decision by the Georgian Government within the framework of the constitutional reform launched in 2017, which calls for the transition to the parliamentary model of governing the country and is to replace the existing electoral system with a fully proportional system in 2024.
While meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General at the European External Action Service, Jean-Christophe Belliard, K. Kuchava scrutinized the results of the constitutional, electoral and judicial reforms carried out by the ruling party.
At the meeting the sides also dwelt on the successful results obtained in the process of implementation of the Association Agreement with the European Union. I. Beraia provided detailed information to Jean-Christophe Belliard on the grave humanitarian and security situation in the occupied territories of Georgia and the Georgian Government's policy of peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The Chair of the Committee also emphasized the role and importance of the EUMM and the EU at large and reiterated about the need for increased international pressure on Russia.
